Preparing for the theory test
The Driving Standards Agency introduced the theory test in July 1996. The theory test is intended to help new drivers appreciate the degree of knowledge that's required whilst driving and in turn replace the old system of questions asked at the end of a practical examination.

Now a practical date can only be acquired when a theoretical pass has been achieved. Paperwork required to book a practical test is a theory pass certificate, and your provisional licence. You will also need some form of payment, i.e. Credit card completed over the phone or you could send through the post a cheque or postal order for the appropriate amount - currently £18.00

Learning to drive seems impossible at first. But Steve is a good instructor and didn't even mind when I kept stalling on the roundabouts! He made everything straight forward to understand, and I passed first time, which is almost entirely down to him. Ta!      - Andy

There is no doubt that a sound grounding and extensive knowledge of driving theory will help towards a better understanding of the practical skills required. Please bare in mind that most of the theory will be learnt whilst carrying out your practical driving lessons.

The theory and hazard perception test ....

The 40 minute test, under exam conditions, consists of multiple-choice questions - most questions require the candidate to identify the correct answer from a choice of four or five possible options. There will also be some multiple response questions, which will require candidates to select more than one answer, from the four or five options given. Some question will contain pictures or road signs or even road situations.

There are 35 questions asked and a minimum of 30 must be answered correctly to pass. After a short break of a couple of minutes the Hazard Perception element will come into play. This is 14 movie clips with a response time allocated via the computer. A top score of 75 marks is available. Learner drivers are required to get a minimum of 44 marks to pass. This section of the test lasts approximately 15 minutes in total. The entire test will last approximately 1 hour - remember both parts must be achieved for an overall pass.

At the end of the test, each candidate will receive his or her own result. It is recommended that you purchase a C.D ROM which also contains the question bank.
Candidates with special needs will have additional time and assistance. Audio facilities are available and the test is also available in multiple languages.

There are no limits to the amount of attempts of this examination.
