Learner Pre-Driver Checks
The "show me, tell me" element
September 2003
This is the latest addition to the practical driving examination. All customers of the Driving Standards Agency going for a driving test, will be asked "show me - tell me" questions. It is very important that the customer answers the questions correct, as the examiner will be marking down incorrect answers.

Below is a list of the possible questions ...

1. What type of car is this?
2. How do you open the bonnet on this car?
3. How would you check the oil level?
4. Where is the radiator, and where would you fill it up?
5. Where is the windscreen washer bottle?
6. What should be added to the washer bottle?
7. What does the battery do?
8. What electrics should you check on the car?
9. How would you check the tyres?
10. How much pressure would you put in the tyres?
11. What would happen if you overfilled the oil level?
12. What could happen if there's not enough oil in the car?
13.  When would you check the levels on the vehicle e.g. oil, water, windscreen washer fluid?
14. Show me how the lights on this vehicle work
15. How would you know whether the brake lights and reversing lights are working?
16. What tyre pressure should be in the tyres on this vehicle and how would you check that?   +
17.  Show me how the foot brake and handbrake work - how would you know if there was a problem with either?   +
18. What is the purpose of power steering?

As part of the Learner driving course, time will be allocated over several weeks to deal with such matters. We will also provide training of how to go about changing a wheel.
